The Virtual Professional
The Virtual Professional is one who goes beyond the need for a specific career at a specific organization. At times, The Virtual Professional works full time for an organization, at other times, works as a contingent worker for two or more organizations.
There are elements of The Virtual Professional that are entrepreneurial in nature--yet not a true entrepreneur (at least not in the majority of cases). The Virtual Professional must be able to "dance" with the changing needs of the world of work and opportunities.
The Traditional View of a Professional’s Career
One would prepare at a young age through formal education. In most professions, one’s formal education would end at a young age—either with a specific undergraduate degree or with a professional graduate degree. At the end of the formal educational process, one would immediately enter an organizational as an employee. While professionals have often changed organizations during their working career—the mindset was to find an ideal organization at a young age—work very hard for the first five to ten years, receive good promotions, and ideally stay with the organization until retirement (age 65).
All of this is changing...
While many still "desire" a variation of this scenario, it is not reality currently, and it most certainly will not be reality for the next few decades. How does one prepare for this change?
The New View of a Professional's Career--Become a Virtual Professional
In order to be successful--or even survive--one needs to change the paradigm for preparing, entering, and thriving in the new world of professional careers. While one does not need to become an entrepreneur, those who develop the skills and mind set of an entrepreneur will be successful.
